White Water Rafting
Visitors could spend a year in Costa Rica and never exhaust the adventures to be had in this beautiful land. White water rafting down any of Costa Rica's warm water rivers is one of the most popular adventure sports for visitors. There are numerous rafting companies that offer expert guides, internationally approved equipment, and tours for beginning to advanced rafters. The Reventazon River challenges beginners with Class III rapids. Most experienced rafters may want to try their luck with the Class IV Pacuare and the tricky Class V waters.
Boat Tours
Take a day cruise to Tortuga (turtle) Island on the Gulf of the Nicoya pennisula. Riverboat sightseeing trips are one of the best ways to see monkeys, caymans, and exotic birds. Several tour operators offer river trips down the rivers of Costa Rica; an unforgettable journey is the boat trip from the coastal city of Limon to the secluded turtle reserve, Tortuguero, in the northeast region of the country.
Mountain Biking/Trekking
Many hotels and local travel agencies rent mountain bikes, and Costa Rica has thousands of miles of roadways and trails to explore. Hiking will take you to some of the most hidden natural beauty such as waterfalls, lakes, and glacial craters. The nine hour climb of Costa Rica's tallest mountain, Chirripo, is highly recommended for visitors in good condition. This trek requires carrying food and cold-weather camping gear up to an elevation of 12,533 feet (3,820 meters).
Horseback Riding
Horseback riding in Costa Rica will let you explore white sand beaches, country roads, pastures, and forest trails. Several tour operators offer a great horseback ride from the Monteverde Rainforest to the mountain ridges of Arenal Volcano. Along the way you can see Arenal Lake, several rivers, and wildlife, hopefully!
Aerial Tram
An aerial canopy tour takes you through the upper heights of the rainforest in a cable car built for six people. The thirty-minute guided ride allows you to see the wet leafy forest from a whole new perspective.
